Want to turn back the hands of time? Reverse sun damage?
Minimize wrinkles and enhance your glow without surgery?

The platelet rich plasma (PRP) facial is a surgical-free option now available at our offices in Munster, La Porte and Valparaiso to improve skin elasticity, texture and tone as well as reduce the appearance of fine lines, acne scars and large pores.

The PRP Facial Procedure

1. Blood Draw

Approximately 2 teaspoons of blood are drawn from your vein.

2. Centrifuge (PRP concentration)

The blood is placed in a centrifuge which spins the vial to separate the platelets from the red blood cells, forming the platelet rich plasma (PRP) concentration.

3. Micro-needling

In the meantime, your skin is cleansed and a light numbing agent is applied to the treatment area before the micro-needling device is used. The device creates tiny needle wounds in the skin, activating the build-up of collagen beneath the skin being treated. The stimulation of collagen quickly improves fine lines, skin texture and scars, priming the treatment area for the next step.

4. PRP Application

The areas being treated are coated with the PRP concentration through a re-needling back into the skin. The growth factors stimulate multipotent stem cells which already exist in the skin. This ‘tricks’ the cells into ‘thinking’ the skin surface is injured, triggering an acceleration of the healing process and the generation of new tissue. The skin responds to this acceleration action by plumping up and thickening wrinkles, lines, or scars. Skin will begin to feel tighter shortly after the session. Its texture, color, and tone begin to improve immediately post-facial and results will continue to develop in the weeks to come.

Post-treatment care

Any remaining PRP is massaged over the treated areas. This helps reduce skin redness and swelling. No further creams or ointments are necessary following the facial. Periodic touch-ups are recommended to maintain the effects of the procedure.

PRP Facial FAQ

What is a PRP facial?

The PRP facial uses microneedling to create thousands of microscopic channels in the skin which kickstart your body’s injury healing mechanisms so that new collagen is produced. When the PRP is applied over the microneedled areas, it penetrates deeper into the underlying skin. Microneedling with PRP is best for patients who have baseline good skin that isn’t severely damaged, and are looking for overall skin rejuvenation and improvement in skin texture.

What areas can be treated?

Popular areas are the face, eyes, neck, chest, hands, and any areas with scarring.

Am I a good candidate?

Those with fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, uneven skin tone, hyper pigmentation, acne scars or anyone wanting a fresher appearance are ideal candidates for the procedure.

  • Having an active infection
  • Existing autoimmune conditions, diabetes, or cancer (including skin cancer)
  • Open wounds and or/ signs of poor wound healing
  • Low platelet counts
  • A tendency to develop keloids / raised scars (Keloidosis)
  • Pregnancy
  • Taking anticoagulants (blood thinning medications)

What’s the difference between traditional microneedling and PRP microneedling?

In short, both facial treatments improve skin texture and help reduce unwanted wrinkles. Healing time is the major difference between the two treatments. With traditional microneedling, you can expect five to seven days of redness or downtime; a PRP facial decreases downtime to 24 hours. By using platelet rich plasma, the micro-injuries begin healing as soon as they are inflicted. The rich growth factors and healing properties within the PRP stimulate greater collagen formation and boosts the skin’s natural healing process. Microneedling with PRP is superior to traditional microneedling because you can achieve better results with fewer treatments.

What is the difference between a PRP facial and a PRP facelift?

A PRP facelift is a series of PRP injections under the skin, combined with hyaluronic fillers to stimulate collagen production and tissue regeneration at a much deeper level than the facial. A PRP facial is the topical application of the PRP serum after microneedling and doesn’t yield the same results as the facelift, but you will still see improvement in skin texture. With PRP injections, the serum is injected in the same manner as dermal fillers, stimulating the body to make a small amount of its own ‘filler’ (i.e. new collagen).

How long do the results last?

Treatment results can last anywhere from nine months to two years. After that, the effects will begin to fade and a follow-up treatment will be required.

How long is the procedure?

The entire treatment takes about 30 minutes to perform in our office.

How many treatments are needed?

The number of procedures required is determined by our staff based on your individual goals and the health of your skin. We will develop a treatment plan specific to your needs as well as a maintenance plan to help retain the rejuvenating effects.

Is there any downtime?

The total healing time depends on each individual patient. Most patients have some slight swelling and redness for 2-4 days. Some patients may heal completely in 24 hours.

What are the risks?

The only risk is bruising at the needling site. Aside from the discomfort of a blood draw and bruising from injections or microneedling, a PRP facial is extremely safe, as it is your body’s own blood being recycled and there is no risk of allergic reaction.

Do the injections hurt?

Mild discomfort is expected during the treatment. Since it involves drawing out blood and multiple needle pricks in your face, a numbing cream can be used prior to the procedure to ensure minimal discomfort and pain.
