Migraine Headaches
In addition to preventing wrinkles, Botox® is now a popular treatment for chronic migraine headaches. For adults with 15 or more days of migraines per month that last 4 or more hours, an injection of Botox at 7 key areas of the head and neck can alleviate and prevent headaches.
These injections are typically administered at 12-week intervals.
Migraine Injection Treatment Process
- You will meet with one of our providers and discuss your health history and migraine experience. Our team will discuss your options and determine whether Botox injections could be the right treatment.
- Using a thin needle, your physician injects Botox across the face, head and neck. They may also inject trigger points where headache pain originates. Treatments are personalized to best fit each patient’s headaches and anatomy.
- It can take several weeks and multiple injection sessions before you begin experiencing relief. The goal is fewer overall migraines with lower-intensity pain.
- Some patients are eventually able to discontinue injections, while others need ongoing treatments to maintain results.
How long has botulinum toxin been used in migraine treatment?
Botox, Dysport and Xeomin were approved by the FDA for migraine treatment in 2010. They were in use for headache treatment long before that approval, as patients receiving them for facial lines found that they also improved headaches.
How do neuromodulators provide migraine relief?
Botulinum toxin stops the release of neurotransmitters that signal pain. This may help with a longer-term reduction in the brain’s pain processes responsible for headaches and chronic migraine. Ongoing injections can reduce headache frequency and pain intensity.
Am I a candidate for migraine injections?
Botox for migraine is appropriate for adults with 15+ days of migraines per month. It can be an effective alternative when traditional headache treatments aren’t working. Treatment can also be covered by health insurance. Patients should continue to pair their injections with a healthy lifestyle and migraine medications as needed.
