Stretch Marks

Our bodies change size and shape throughout our lives – and our skin can carry memories of those changes. Stretch marks form after the skin stretches or shrinks too quickly. They can be large or small, dark or light, and form from a variety of causes. But no matter the reason for your stretch marks, if you’re feeling self-conscious about them, you deserve an effective treatment option.

We offer Venus Viva resurfacing for improving stretch marks. Schedule a complimentary consultation to learn more and take first steps.

What is a stretch mark, exactly?

Stretch marks (striae) are a form of scarring. When the skin changes shape rapidly, the internal structures (collagen and elastin) rupture. The dark marks then appear as the skin heals. Dramatic hormonal fluctuations, some medications, and certain types of hormones can also encourage stretch mark formation.

There are certain periods of life and physical states during which stretch marks are likely to appear – puberty (during growth spurts), pregnancy (when the abdomen skin stretches), and rapid weight gain or loss (due to the changing size and shape of the skin).

Stretch marks may appear red, white, black, or dark blue.

Can I prevent stretch marks?

The majority of stretch mark causes are not truly preventable. During periods like growth spurts or pregnancy, the skin is going to stretch quickly, and we just can’t change that. The same applies to related medical conditions and medications. There is also a genetic component, as those whose family members have developed stretch marks are more likely to develop them. Women are also more likely to develop stretch marks.

The only more controllable cause is rapid weight gain or weight loss, but those both have contributing factors outside of our control.

Can I improve stretch marks at home?

There is a wide range of stretch mark topical agents available over the counter – creams, gels, and lotions that purport to prevent stretch mark formation or improve existing scarring. There is very little research that supports their efficacy, and many don’t do anything – particularly for older stretch marks.

If you intervene with a topical treatment when you first notice a stretch mark, and apply it consistently while accompanying it with massage, you are more likely to see results. But you should also be careful to avoid medications that avoid potentially harmful agents like retinol if you are pregnant.

The best course of action is to talk to a professional before starting a home stretch mark regimen – this will ensure that whatever your treatment, it is safe and effective.

Before and After Stretch Mark Treatment

Before and after Venus Viva

We offer stretch mark treatment with the Venus Viva. This device uses nanofractional radiofrequency energy to stimulate new collagen production.

  • During treatment, the radiofrequency energy gently heats multiple layers of the skin.
  • This encourages the collagen within the skin to rebuild lost structures and revitalize the treatment area.
  • This improves scars and other superficial damage.
  • Because treatment reaches deeper layers of the skin than options like laser treatment or peels, results tend to be more pronounced.
  • Skin should be tighter with a more even tone and texture once full treatment results have taken hold.
