CoolSculpting vs. CoolTone: Let’s Compare

Woman with toned muscle low bodyfatYou may have heard about non-invasive body contouring treatments that help you get to your desired body shape without surgery. Two of the most popular? CoolSculpting and CoolTone.

While both are offered by the same trusted company and use state-of-the-art, minimally-invasive technology, they are each best for different goals. So which one of these treatments is right for you? Read on to find out more.

What is CoolSculpting?

before and after coolsculptingMany people have pockets of fat in certain areas of the body that are simply resistant to diet and exercise. Luckily, CoolSculpting is specifically designed to target and address these specific trouble areas.

CoolSculpting is an FDA-cleared, non-invasive option designed to reduce stubborn fat in the treatment area. It is a non-surgical alternative to liposuction that works by freezing and eliminating fat cells.

The procedure uses a technology called cryolipolysis, which is a fancy way to say “fat-freezing.” During a treatment, an applicator is placed on the target area, which delivers controlled cooling to cool the fat cells beneath the skin beyond the temperature at which they can survive. The frozen fat cells are then naturally eliminated by the body over the following weeks and months. The surrounding skin and tissue are left unharmed.

Common treatment areas for CoolSculpting include:

  • Abdomen
  • Sides (love handles)
  • Thighs (inner and outer)
  • Under the chin
  • Back
  • Upper arms

CoolSculpting is best suited for those who are near their ideal body weight but struggle with localized fat deposits.

What is CoolTone?

before and after cooltoneCoolTone is another FDA-cleared treatment from the same company that makes CoolScuptling focused on strengthening, toning, and firming muscles. Instead of targeting fat, CoolTone uses Magnetic Muscle Stimulation (MMS) technology to induce powerful muscle contractions that you just can’t get with regular exercise.

Similar to CoolSculpting, during a CoolTone session, an applicator is placed over the targeted muscle group. The device then generates a magnetic field that creates involuntary muscle contractions. A single 30-minute session can produce the equivalent of thousands of reps of a targeted exercise (think crunches or squats), leading to stronger and more defined muscles.

CoolTone is FDA-cleared for the following areas:

  • Abdomen
  • Glutes (Buttocks)
  • Thighs

This treatment is ideal for those at or near their target weight that want to achieve a more toned and sculpted look. It helps improve muscle definition and strength in a way that complements a regular fitness routine.

Fat Reduction vs. Muscle Toning

Both treatments are non-invasive and require no downtime, allowing you to return to your daily activities immediately. The primary difference between CoolSculpting and CoolTone is the targeted tissue and the effects of treatment. Put simply, CoolSculpting eliminates fat, while CoolTone builds muscle.

In many cases, patients can benefit from a combination of both treatments. For example, if you have a layer of fat covering your abdominal muscles, you first need to reduce that fat to see the muscle definition underneath. CoolSculpting would be the appropriate first step to remove the fat layer. Once the fat is reduced, CoolTone could then be used to strengthen and define the abdominal muscles, making them more visible. This allows for a comprehensive body contouring plan that addresses both unwanted fat and a lack of muscle definition.

A consultation with an experienced provider is the best way to determine if a single treatment or a combination plan is the right choice for your specific body and goals.
