Liquid Facelift vs. Surgical Facelift

Woman examining face and skin considering facelift. Facelifts have been around for quite a long time and are a common surgical procedure for achieving dramatic anti-aging results. But if going under the knife seems drastic, modern techniques are here to offer you a much less invasive and risky alternative for achieving a more youthful appearance. Minimally invasive dermal fillers can be expertly placed in what we call a “liquid facelift.” This treatment can accomplish a noticeable transformation. This article will show you the very significant difference between a liquid facelift and a surgical facelift and dive into some of the pros and cons of each.

Surgical Facelift

What is a Surgical Facelift?

A surgical facelift is done under general anesthesia. While there are several variations, the procedure typically involves incisions at the hairline, from the temples, to the front of the ears, then to the scalp below and behind the ears, and sometimes under the chin. The surgeon may remove or reposition fat and other underlying tissue to alter the shape of the face. Excess skin may also be removed before the remaining skin is tightened and secured.

Pros and Cons of a Surgical Facelift

The results of a surgical facelift can be quite dramatic. Benefits include tightening the skin, plumping or thinning specific areas of the face, smoothing creases and wrinkles, reducing or eliminating saggy skin, and even correcting a double chin. Results can last up to ten years or longer. Despite all of the benefits of facelift surgery, it is major surgery. General anesthesia, as well as the surgical procedure itself, carries significant risks. You will need to take 1-2 weeks off work, and full recovery can take up to 6 weeks.

Liquid Facelift

What is a Liquid Facelift?

A liquid facelift can be an excellent alternative to consider. While the results are less dramatic, there is significantly less risk and downtime associated with a liquid facelift. A liquid facelift primarily involves injections. These injections include dermal fillers, and can sometimes incorporate neuromodulators (known more popularly by their brand names Botox or Dysport). A dermal filler is usually a synthetic version of a substance naturally found in your body. As we age, we lose collagen and elastin under our skin, which can result in a sagging appearance that exaggerates wrinkles. Dermal fillers are used to plump up the affected areas of the face. They can provide a more youthful appearance and smooth fine lines and wrinkles, and also stimulate the body’s natural production of collagen.

Pros and Cons of a Liquid Facelift

The type, location, and amount of these injections are highly customizable. Meaning that we can tailor your treatment to address your specific cosmetic concerns and problem areas. Results from a liquid facelift are more natural-looking than a surgical facelift. But with a liquid facelift, the outcome will not be as dramatic. Depending on the extent of treatment you choose, a liquid facelift can last up to 2 years. A liquid facelift is not a surgical procedure and does not require you to be put to sleep. There are no incisions, and underlying tissue is not removed or repositioned. For these reasons, the risks of a liquid facelift are far less than having surgery. An additional benefit is that there is significantly less downtime. The entire procedure usually takes less than half an hour, and you can resume most normal activities immediately. Lastly, the cost of a liquid facelift is substantially less than that of a surgical lift.

Which is Right for You?

Amazing transformations can occur with modern procedures. Deciding which cosmetic procedure to consider is a highly personalized decision. If you are seeking a more subtle transformation, or if surgery seems extreme, a liquid facelift may be an excellent choice for you.
